Preparing Your Child for the 4+ Entrance Exam

The Parents Guide to 4+ Entrance Exam

Literacy, Numeracy & Social Development

What are

4+ entrance exam?

4+ entrance exams are becoming increasingly popular across the majority of selective, independent schools in the UK, and parents are naturally concerned that their children should be expected to display outstanding abilities in all curricular areas.

Although schools don’t fully disclose exactly what they are looking for, rest assured there are simple steps you can take to ensure that your child is fully prepared. 4+ assessments take place within small groups of 4-12 children, typically from October to February, before the September entrance.

The 4+ assessments have two rounds. In the first round, your child will be in a group environment where they will have a variety of activities to engage with. The second assessment includes similar activities, but more focus will be spent on individual interaction with assessors and more singular academic tasks. It is common that during the second round process parents will also be interviewed.

Don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds.

Who Am I

Hosai

I have over 11 years of experience teaching in both Toronto & London. I gained my Bachelor of Arts from York University and my Master’s degree in teaching from Medaille College. I have gained experience in the UK, initially as a classroom teacher, but more recently as a Year Leader and a Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Co-ordinator. I have also consulted on early-years development with the Royal Foundations ‘Heads Together’ programme, a children’s Mental Health initiative, spearheaded by the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.

My teaching abilities and my leadership credentials allow me to create a teaching style that primarily focuses on the emotional and mental development of children that, not only, allows them to academically excel at assessment time, but also provides them with the tools to continue to excel well through their early years.

I am selective with the number of children I take on each year. Between my extra-curricular commitments and my children at home, I want to ensure I can give each pupil, and their parents, the required time throughout the week. Therefore, I do pre-assessments with all the children that apply, so I can ensure my style and my methods are the right fit for your child.
